I've been working on getting Durango to just "free lunge" in the arena. However I couldn't get him to switch directions without turning his butt/heels to me. I can't have that, (according to CA) so I have been putting Clintons technique to use and while it took a few times of practice, now he is GETTING IT!
The technique consists of driving him with my belly button at his shoulder. And when I want him to change direction, I must step out in front of his drive line, switch the stick to my other hand, give him a little hand signal (like come to me) and step into him. I've been doing this pretty good, but you will see in the video, where I didn't step out soon enough and he just tried running right through it. That's where he got all excited and bucked out. But, in the end, he did what he was told.
When you see him changing pace, listen and see if you can hear me saying my cues:
I'm saying "Up" for slow down from that pace, Then I say "Whoa" and he will stop and come into me. But, he won't come all the way in because THATS my space. So I then meet him half way for a praise and rub.
